MediaCity launches ultimate World Cup playground

MediaCity announces its biggest programme of events to date for the World Cup, from baller-league style football pitch to big name creator takeovers.

As the home of the BBC’s World Cup coverage, MediaCity is going big this summer. The waterside destination will be bringing it home for Greater Mancunians and football fans alike with the most electric series of activations that you won’t get to experience anywhere else – giving visitors an insight into the scale of World Cup production taking place at MediaCity.

At the heart of this tournament’s activity, football fans will be able to play five-a-side on a bespoke pitch while watching World Cup matches on giant screens.

Nowhere else in Greater Manchester will be bringing some of the UK’s biggest Gen Z creators down for full takeovers and offering a pop-up Gaming Hub enabling eSports and EA FC fans the chance to play. Including the opportunity to compete for prizes in a Gaming tournament thanks to HEADS Creative.

MediaCity will also be activating an unmissable Content Pavillion, featuring a fully equipped podcast and content creation studio that’s FREE TO USE. A fully kitted podcast studio with a rooftop viewing area over the pitch, enabling podcasters, youtubers, streamers and creators to record an episode or capture content right in the heart of the action.

These are just some of the events that will be kicking off at MediaCity, with the BBC’s World Cup pundits also set to make appearances throughout the broadcaster’s coverage of the tournament. A giant TIFO has also been unveiled giving football fans the ultimate ‘instagrammable’ moment for the World Cup.

Additionally, the team from GRUB On the Docks will be serving up bold global flavours and summer-ready drinks with their rotating line-up of independent street food operators all summer long. They are also set to host atmosphere building Quiz nights with BBC Radio Manchester presenter and Sloppy Joes Podcast host Joe McGrath (for the first two England games, starting from 6pm), Live music and energy fuelled DJ sets, a hit of nostalgia with the Panini Sticker Swap Meet (Saturday 20th), plus Shindigger and Estrella Damm beer giveaways.

Foundation 92 will deliver free Premier League Kicks football sessions for aspiring young players. Taking place on the five-a-side pitch, the sessions will provide opportunities for local talent to learn from the best in the business and develop their skills in a safe and inclusive environment. The free sessions delivered by Foundation 92’s experienced coaching staff will take place from 4pm-6pm on each Monday in June.

On top of this, Manchester United’s Street Reds will be taking over the pitch to support and nurture the United stars of the future!

Visitors to MediaCity will be able to catch the ultimate Instagrammable World Cup moment with a ginormous official adidas’ Trionda ball pop up that has landed to add to the celebrations.

Alice Webb, CEO of MediaCity at MediaCity, said: "As the nerve centre of BBC’s World Cup coverage, we're turning MediaCity into the ultimate football playground.

“As well as broadcasting the World Cup, MediaCity will unite fans, families and communities, bringing them closer to the action with in-person experiences throughout the tournament. Combining our world-class media platform with unrivalled public experiences is what makes us different. Come down and get stuck in!”
