Crescent, Salford - Building Smarter. Living Better.
Crescent is a transformational 240-acre regeneration programme being delivered through a partnership between Salford City Council, the University of Salford and ECF (English Cities Fund). Located around Salford Crescent and the University campus, it is creating a new mixed-use district that combines innovation, research, education, homes, culture and high-quality public spaces in one connected urban neighbourhood.
At the heart of the vision is the creation of a world-leading innovation ecosystem where academia, industry and communities come together to solve real-world challenges. Building on the University of Salford's internationally recognised strengths in the built environment, acoustics, robotics, sustainability and health innovation, Crescent is being developed as a place where research can be translated into commercial opportunity, business growth and societal impact.
Crescent Innovation North
The first major phase of this ambition is Crescent Innovation North, which secured outline planning consent in 2024 and will establish a new innovation district at the centre of Greater Manchester's "Innovation Triangle", linking the University of Salford, Salford Royal and MediaCity.
The consented masterplan will deliver:
- More than 1 million sq ft of innovation and commercial floorspace
- New education, research and innovation facilities
- Up to 900 new homes
- Retail, leisure and food and beverage uses
- Significant public realm and community spaces
- Future-ready infrastructure connected by Salford Rise and enhanced transport links.
An Innovation Ecosystem, Not Just Real Estate
The Crescent Development Framework set out a long-term vision focused on creating a curated ecosystem rather than a conventional business park. The ambition is centred around attracting and supporting innovators, start-ups, scale-ups and established businesses through a combination of research capability, specialist facilities, business support and place-making.
Key strengths include:
- Direct access to University of Salford research, talent and specialist facilities.
- Focus on high-growth sectors including the built environment, sustainability, robotics, medtech and acoustics.
- Strong civic, academic and private-sector partnership.
- A commitment to innovation, skills, inclusion and social value.
- A vibrant mixed-use environment where people can learn, work, live and collaborate in one location.
The goal is to create a destination where ideas become products, research becomes enterprise and innovation delivers tangible benefits for local communities alongside national and international impact.
Why Crescent?
Crescent offers a rare opportunity to be part of one of the UK's most ambitious innovation districts. With planning consent secured, major infrastructure now being delivered and a clear roadmap for ecosystem development, Crescent is well positioned to become a nationally significant centre for innovation, investment and inclusive growth over the coming decades.
This is a place where innovation, community and opportunity come together to build smarter and live better.
